The IRT UK website has had a makeover

I have re-done the Institute website using a content management system (Joomla). This will make it easier for me to administer and update, and will not require a great knowledge of html or css coding should anyone take it on in the future.

No Changes to Members Access

The website now incudes a subscribing system for newsletters – and I have subscribed everyone who is currently registered as a member of the Institute to this system.  So you should continue to log into your account as normal.

Better Browsing ?

I have found that using a different web browser has speeded up the internet for me in general and so will be using Firefox instead of Internet Explorer from here on.  I would recommend that you take a look at it.  You can download it from here – http://www.mozilla.org/

Stay safe in the snow.

On April 13 and 14, 2012, The William Glasser Institute will be sponsoring along with Albemarle County Schools and Blackboard.com a free online Quality School Conference.

The object of the conference is to provide a free online environment where people can share their best ideas with each other. The conference will include panel discussions involving members from Glasser Quality School communities, so participants can meet and talk with one another about best practices. There will be breakout sessions where teachers, students, and families share what they are accomplishing. Administrators will also create some breakout sessions so that other administrators can see what is being done in schools to successfully create a Glasser Quality Schools environment.

The keynote speakers are two remarkable women, Dr. Margo Figgins, an education professor at the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia and Ashby Kindler, the cur rent principal of Murray High School and a Practicum Supervisor for the William Glasser Institute. The conference is for progressive educators all over the world, though it is primarily directed to Glasser Quality Schools.

If you are interested in presenting please go to http://bit.ly/BreakingTradition2012 and fill out the Call for Proposals form at the website. Proposals are due by Monday, February. 20, 2012. All you will need is a microphone and camera, so we can see your face (and your panel, if you are pulling together members of your community to participate in the breakout sessions/panel discussions.) As we approach the date of the conference, you will receive more information about how to test your equipment to be sure you are ready to participate, including a very short training session in how to present using blackboard.com‘s Colla borate online conference software.

This conference can be a great opportunity to share what we are doing not only with one another, but with educators worldwide.

I hope you choose to participate.

First International Convention under the auspices of the newly created International Board

In June 2012 we will have the very first International Convention under the auspices of the newly created International Board. For our Board in its infancy and with an already overloaded agenda the decision to run this has not been easy but not to go ahead would have been unthinkable! To celebrate our great International gathering in Dr. Glasser’s home town carries so much significance for us all.

VENUE: Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, California, USA
DATES: 6th to 9th June 2012

Los Angeles is the perfect location for this year’s event. It gives us a special chance to initiate a world-wide march to the home of Choice Theory; it gives us a special way of celebrating and saying thanks to Dr. Glasser. It will be a unique gathering. Carleen has written a powerful invitation to us all to be in Los Angeles this summer. It is an invitation that comes straight from the heart and reaches all of ours (below).

A LETTER TO YOU FROM CARLEEN GLASSER

Dear Friends and Members of The WGI Family Worldwide,

I am writing this letter on behalf of my beloved husband Bill Glasser. He was very happy to hear that there is going to be an International Convention of The William Glasser Institute this June, at Loyola Marymount University, in Los Angeles, California.

The reason I am writing this letter is to share with you what he said. Bill asked me to tell you, he is no longer able to travel anywhere and he wanted you to know that, because he cannot come to you, the LA Convention would probably be his last opportunity to see you in person. He said he wants to spend some time with you, shake your hands and thank you for all you have done to support his ideas over the years.

So I am asking if you could find a way to come here, where we live, to be with Bill at the conference. I know how much it would mean to him. He remembers how many times you came to hear him speak and to be with each other at past conventions. There are many new faces now and exciting directions the ideas are taking. Bill wants to be a part of all you are doing today and hear about your ideas for the future. He is forever a lifelong learner.

Please, join us in celebrating Bill, his life, his contributions and his legacy in Los Angeles, 2012. He said the time has come for us to be connected with one vision.

In Friendship and commitment,
Carleen Glasser

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar…and the beer.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a  unanimous “yes.”

The professor then produced two cans of beer from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

“Now,” said the professor, as the laughter subsided, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things–your family, your children, your health, your friends, and your favorite passions–things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.  “The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, your car. The sand is everything else–the small stuff.

If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued, “there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out to dinner. Play another 18 holes. There will always be time to clean the house, and fix the disposal. “Take care of the golf balls first, the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.”

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the beer represented.

The professor smiled.

“I’m glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there’s always room for a couple of beers.”

Meteorologically,  it became official Autumn on 1st September !

Where the number of nominees exceeded the quota, those who headed the poll were appointed as representatives. In the event of a tie the number of second or third rankings awarded to each candidate was used to resolve the matter.

The seven areas have been created provisionally by the Interim Board as a way to ensure that everyone has representation on the Board that the Board is an efficient size The number of representatives is based on the number of certified people in each area. Members Special Offer

I have managed to get hold of 8 copies of Dibs and can offer them out to members at a cost of £2.00 each (free postage).  These paperbacks are used, but are still a great read and should be on the bookshelf of everyone who works in the childcare field.

Only 8 copies available

Overview:

Virginia Axline (1911-1988) was the main architect of non-directed play therapy and her account of her work in the early 1950s with an emotionally disturbed six year old, which had a profound effect on her, has become a classic text.

Dibs will not talk. He will not play. He has locked himself in a very special prison. And he is alone. This is the true story of how he learned to reach out for the sunshine, for life . . . how he came to the breathless discovery of himself that brought him back to the world of other children.

Available from the members Discount Bookshop in the members area of the website.

‘Using Reality Therapy’ – Robert E Wubbolding

Log in to your members page and checkout the members discounted bookshop. There are a number of special offers at the moment including the hard to get ‘Using Reality Therapy’ : £6.00 off the regular price for a limited time only.

First published in 1988 this book is a very readable treatment of the practice of Reality Therapy, discussing various techniques and client groups. This is a very practical book, as it helps students to understand the basic concepts using examples and counselling dialogue.

To all persons who are CT/RT certified (Choice Theory/Reality Therapy certified) with the

William Glasser Institute

Exciting and important news!

In July 2010 at the International WGI Conference in Nashville (Tennessee, USA), a proposal to set up an International Board for the William Glasser Institute was approved. Since then an Interim Board has been working to put in place the procedures for electing members to the Board of Directors of William Glasser Association International.

We are initiating the process that will lead to elections to the founding board at this time.

The first step is to create an Electoral Register of all those who are CT/RT Certified. Registration will consist in filling in a simple online form.

If you wish to participate in these elections we invite you to register at the

ELECTORAL REGISTRATION FORM (< click here)

Our target date for registration is now 4th May 2011.

When you register you will be notified in due course about the actual election procedures.

Many thanks for your time.
